On 4 February 2025, the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg hosted a Special Baltic Earth Colloquium on the occasion of the retirement of Dr. Marcus Reckermann, Head of the International Baltic Earth Secretariat.
The event brought together invited guests and Baltic Earth scientists to reflect on key achievements and discuss future directions. The colloquium highlighted major research advancements, including studies on the Baltic Sea water cycle, saltwater inflows, climate change impacts, and biogeochemical processes. Discussions also covered the role of regional science programs such as GEWEX and CORDEX, along with collaborations with HELCOM.
A significant milestone of the event was the official transition of the International Baltic Earth Secretariat from Hereon to its new hosts: the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde, Rostock, and the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Sopot. This transition was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, ensuring the continued success and development of Baltic Earth.
