Exploring the intricate role of benthic invertebrates for marine ecosystem functioning

Marc J. Silberberger
National Marine Fisheries Research Institute
Gdynia, Poland

Benthic invertebrate communities play a vital role in marine ecosystems by contributing to organic carbon storage, transfer of energy or pollutants through benthic food webs, or driving organic matter remineralization and nutrient cycling. This presentation will provide a comprehensive assessment of their ecological functions, drawing on research from the Southern Baltic Sea. It will examine the importance of benthic communities for sediment biogeochemistry as well as their functional and trophic roles within the ecosystem. Additionally, the presentation will highlight recent shifts in meroplankton (the pelagic larval stages of benthic invertebrates) and discuss implications for pelagic-benthic coupling. The findings emphasize the intricate connections between benthic invertebrates and broader marine ecosystem processes, offering valuable insights into the resilience and functionality of benthic systems in a changing environment.
